Discover the wonder and beauty of Giselle
Enter the ethereal realm conjured up in the timeless masterpiece of the Romantic era, presented this winter by the National Ballet of Canada. Haunting, spellbinding and a regular in repertoires across the world, discover the beauty of Giselle, her sorry tale and the supernatural Wilis - the damned spirits of betrayed women whose ranks she joins after losing her lover.
Giselle first debuted in Paris in June 1841 and has long been a coveted role for ballerinas. Although it has magical themes, Giselle has always been considered a truly human story of heartbreak and loss.
When the young peasant maiden Giselle falls for a boy she believes to be a lower class like herself, she thinks her life is set. Their love was pure ecstasy, they talked, laughed and danced together. However, this dream couldn't be further away from the truth. When Giselle finds out her lover is the disguised Duke of Silesia who is about to wed another, the pain is enough to end Giselle's life and send her spirit into a bustling enchanted forest full of danger.
